On 4 October 2021, at its Savannah headquarters, Gulfstream introduced two aircraft at once: the ultra-long-range G800 and the G400. The G400 was the industry's first new large-cabin aircraft in more than a decade, in Gulfstream's phrasing, and it was designed to sit between the super-midsize G280 and the G500 in the company's lineup. Gulfstream president Mark Burns said the company had designed it with direct customer input, with the cabin comfort of the larger models in the range and speed category the G400 occupies.
The first flight came on 15 August 2024 from Savannah/Hilton Head International Airport: 2 hours and 54 minutes, Mach 0.85, 41,000 feet, flown on a blend of sustainable aviation fuel. Gulfstream's test program comprised four flight-test aircraft plus a production-test aircraft dedicated to cabin comfort and maturity, per the company's 2023 releases. In June 2026, one of the three flight-test aircraft appeared at Gulfstream's Discover the Difference event in Farnborough, England, the G400's European debut.

Where the G400 sits
The G400 uses the G500's wing and a shortened G500 fuselage, with 2.5 cabin zones and 10 windows against the G500's 3 zones and 12. It lands in the space once occupied by the G450, of which Gulfstream built 359 between 2005 and 2017, per AMSTAT data cited by Avfoil. The commercial logic is straightforward: a large-cabin Gulfstream with transatlantic range at a lower price point than anything above it in the line.
The first notable order for the type came from the charter world. Gulfstream announced that DC Aviation Group of Germany had purchased the first G400 intended for dedicated charter operations, at a signing ceremony at Gulfstream's customer support facility in Farnborough, England.
The honest word on price
The $34.5 million figure dates to the October 2021 launch announcement and was widely reported at the time. Gulfstream does not publish a standing list price for the G400, and we will not invent a current one. Treat the launch figure as a 2021 reference point, not an offer.
What the record does not yet say
Two caveats belong on the record. First, the certification timeline: Gulfstream anticipated entry into service in 2025, and Jettly's 2026 industry survey lists late-2025 to early-2026 certification, but Gulfstream has not, to our knowledge, published a first-customer-delivery announcement. The AYRAM market report of May 2026 states that deliveries have begun; that is the state of the public record as of publication. Second, none of the performance figures above are demonstrated except where noted: they are manufacturer-published specifications, and we present them as such.
